Gallbladder removal for cholelithiasis consists of removing this organ, located next to the liver, due to the formation of gallstones in it or in the bile ducts that connect it to the duodenum and the liver.
This surgery is recommended when pain after each meal is frequent due to poor digestion and there is a possibility of more serious problems, such as acute cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder), pancreatitis, etc.

To carry out this process, there are different surgical techniques, whose differences lie mainly in the duration of the process, the length of stay, the postoperative period and the scars. Among them, one of the most important aspects for most patients is the duration of the postoperative period, which would answer the question "When am I going to be well?”

After the procedure, the patient is taken to the resuscitation room where he/she remains until his/her vital signs are stabilised. Once this has been achieved, the patient is taken to their room.
The length of the hospital stay is usually approximately 1 to 3 days, depending on the patient. During the stay, the patient will be cared for by the nursing team and will be taught how to correctly care for the wound.
Once you are home, it is normal to feel some pain in the surgical wound for the first two weeks, so as long as the wound care is performed as specified in the hospital, everything should be fine. If at any time you notice excessive redness or oozing from the wound, contact your surgeon.
The return to work will depend on the patient and the type of work performed, being 3 weeks for office jobs that do not require too much physical effort and just over a month for the rest of the interventions.
Total recovery is between 4 and 8 weeks, with the postoperative period ending when the patient no longer feels any discomfort and can continue to lead a normal life.
