  • Phimosis is a male problem caused by a narrow foreskin that prevents the glans from being uncovered.
  • The most common treatment for phimosis is circumcision, a surgical procedure that removes part of the foreskin, leaving the glans permanently uncovered.
  • Complications of circumcision are very rare and can generally be solved with postoperative care and specific instructions from the urologist.

What does the phimosis surgery consist of?

The surgical treatment to solve the problems caused by phimosis is circumcision, which aims to remove the skin covering the glans penis, the foreskin.

It is a surgery that has been performed for centuries for various cultural and religious reasons, as well as for health reasons, such as narrowing of the foreskin, which makes it impossible to retract over the glans penis (phimosis), or for the treatment of inflammation of the foreskin (paraphimosis).

On the other hand, you should bear in mind that circumcision surgery is not recommended at all ages. In the case of boys, it is best to wait at least until the child reaches 3-5 years of age, and to try to solve the problem with corticosteroid treatment before resorting to surgery.

Phimosis surgery

In the case of adults, surgery is fully recommended at any age, especially in the case of moderate to severe symptoms of phimosis. However, we insist that you consult your specialist about the advantages and disadvantages of this procedure for your health, especially if you have a blood clotting disorder.

In general, the phimosis or circumcision surgery is an outpatient procedure performed under local anaesthesia (with or without sedation).

The duration of this surgery is only 30-45 minutes and there is a recovery time of approximately 2 weeks after the operation.

Advantages of phimosis surgery

As we have been saying, the purpose of circumcision is to eliminate the symptoms caused by phimosis, as well as other related conditions or, in some cases, to improve the area aesthetically. Therefore, this surgical treatment has several advantages for both adults and children, which we explain below.

Consultation with an urologist

Circumcision may have a number of health benefits, including the following:

  • Easier hygiene. Circumcision makes it simpler to wash the penis. However, boys with uncircumcised penises can be taught to regularly wash the area under the foreskin.
  • The risk of urinary tract infections in men is low; however, urinary tract infections are more common in men who have not been circumcised. Severe infections that occur early in life can cause kidney problems later in life.

Circumcision does not affect fertility and is generally not thought to increase or decrease sexual pleasure in men or their partners.

  • Circumcised men may have a lower risk of contracting certain sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV. However, safe sexual practices still require the use of adequate protection.
  • Prevention of penile problems: Sometimes it may be difficult or impossible to retract the foreskin of an uncircumcised penis (phimosis). This can lead to inflammation of the foreskin or glans penis.
