What is a knee replacement?

A total knee replacement surgery, also known as total knee arthroplasty, is a common surgical procedure in which the entire knee joint is replaced with an artificial prosthesis.

In order to ensure the success of the surgery and the proper recovery of the patient, it’s important to understand the elements necessary for its performance, and the factors influencing the cost of a knee replacement surgery.

In this article, we will learn more about the average cost of Total Knee Replacement Surgery in Spain, the essential services and fees included in its price and also what Operarme can offer for this surgical treatment differently than other providers.

What is the average cost of a knee replacement surgery?

The cost of a knee replacement surgery can vary depending on hospital costs, prosthetic material cost, location, patient’s circumstances, among other elements.

Generally, the cost for a knee arthroplasty in private hospitals in Spain is estimated between 10.000€ and 20.000€, depending always on factors and elements such as the following:

  • Hospital location and its reputation: sometimes you can find hospitals with a higher cost of their fees due to their location. If they are located in a large city, especially if it is a coastal city, the hospital cost may be higher than a hospital located in a small city. Moreover, when a hospital belongs to a renowned hospital group usually charges higher costs as well.
  • Type of knee replacement: the type of knee replacement and the prosthesis required influences largely the cost, since a partial knee is considerably cheaper than a total knee prosthetic.
  • Hospital costs: this factor includes all the expenses and fees related to the booking of an operation theatre for example, or the surgeon fees, medical team fees, anaesthesiologist, nursing care, medications… All these services may significantly increase the final cost of the surgery.
  • Implant costs: the type of prosthesis needed for the operation, as well as the quality and material it is made of, can add to the total cost of the surgery. The care and sterilisation process that is carried out to preserve the prosthesis until it is implanted must also be taken into account.
  • Pre-operative preparation and tests: Included as well in the overall package is the pre-operative stage where tests are performed to check the patient’s health for medical clearance. These tests include: blood test, chest X-ray, and electrocardiogram.
  • Hospital stay: Generally, the final cost of this type of surgery includes hospitalisation for 4 to 5 days: including food and clothing for the patient, nursing care, a private or shared room and medication.
  • Follow-up care: follow-up appointments with the surgeon, and monitoring to ensure healing during the post-surgery period is always included in the price of the surgery.

Frequent Questions

What is the best age to have a knee replacement?

Specialists generally recommend that patients under the age of 50 wait a few years before undergoing a knee replacement, as an artificial knee replacement only lasts between 15-20 years.

This is the reason why this surgery is more common among elderly people.

How much does a knee replacement cost in the UK?

What happens if you wait too long for knee replacement surgery?

If a patient over the age of 50 waits too long to undergo a knee replacement, the main problem would be continued deterioration of the knee joint, causing more stiffness, severe pain and mobility problems.

For this reason, orthopaedic surgery specialists recommend directly the implantation of an artificial prosthesis instead of undergoing a treatment of hyaluronic acid infiltrations.
