What is a vasectomy?

Vasectomy is a surgery that aims to make a man sterile by sectioning the vas deferens, which is responsible for transporting sperm from the testicles to the urethra.

When a vasectomy is performed, the man continues to ejaculate as usual, the only main difference being that after the operation there is no sperm in the seminal fluid.

Vasectomy is an operation in which the surgeon makes an incision in the scrotal area where he cuts and ligates the vas deferens, thus interrupting the passage of sperm from the testicles to the seminal duct.

Vasectomy is a simple surgical method of contraception, which eliminates the possibility of pregnancy.

When the vas deferens is severed, sperm are no longer expelled during ejaculation, thus preventing the possibility of pregnancy.

Vasectomy does not alter the production of sperm, but only prevents them from being expelled along with the semen. In this way, the sperm accumulates in a part of the testicle where it is reabsorbed by the body.

It should be clear that after vasectomy it is not advisable to have unprotected intercourse, since sperm still remains in the ducts and in the upper portion of the vas deferens for at least the next 4 weeks or after approximately 20 ejaculations.

After vasectomy surgery and to ensure that the semen no longer contains sperm, the patient must have two spermiograms with negative results to ensure the success of the surgery.

Things you should know about vasectomy

  1. Vasectomy surgery does not affect ejaculation, which continues to occur normally. The difference is that after the procedure the sperm are no longer present in the seminal fluid.
  2. The body continues to produce sperm normally after the surgery, but will not release it when ejaculating as the vas deferens has been modified and the sperm is reabsorbed by the body.
  3. A vasectomy does not affect libido or sexual desire. Erections and desire remain as they were before the procedure.
  4. Vasectomy is a very effective surgery, but it is not performed immediately, as it takes time for the sperm to be completely removed from the seminal contents. Several weeks after the procedure, a spermiogram is performed to determine the complete disappearance of sperm from the semen.
  5. This is a minimally invasive procedure. The patient can return home the same day. This surgery is performed under local anaesthesia avoiding any sensation of pain or discomfort during the procedure.
  6. This operation is 99% effective. After vasectomy and postoperative recovery, it is recommended to have about 20 ejaculations using contraceptives, ensuring the disappearance of sperm.
  7. A vasectomy does not decrease or influence the production of testosterone, a hormone that is produced in the testicles and helps in the development of body hair or muscle mass.
  8. To reverse vasectomy, a surgical procedure is performed that involves reconnecting the vas deferens. It is a procedure that can take up to 4 hours and is performed using specialised microscopic equipment. If male fertility is to be reversed, it is recommended within 5 years of the vasectomy and is a procedure with a very low success rate.
  9. Vasectomy does not remove the testicles as some people may believe.
  10. There is no scientific evidence to support the belief that vasectomy increases the risks or chances of developing prostate or testicular cancer. Nor does it reduce or prevent the appearance of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and it is essential to take the necessary precautions.
