Information of Gastric Sleeve

The gastric sleeve, or sleeve gastrectomy, is a bariatric surgery that permanently reduces the size of the stomach.

This bariatric technique is one of the least invasive and can reduce the size of the stomach by up to 80%.

The gastric sleeve helps limit the amount of food that can be consumed and reduces appetite thanks to the decrease in ghrelin (the hunger hormone).

At Operarme, we offer you the Gastric Sleeve surgical treatment for 12.500 €. This price includes everything necessary for the surgery to be carried out safely and with the highest possible success rate.

Among the services included in the fixed price of this surgery, Operarme provides a medical complications insurance policy covering the 30 days following the procedure. This insurance covers any possible eventualities that may arise after surgery, such as the need to extend the hospital stay → You can check all the conditions here.

On this page, we will detail all the relevant information about this bariatric surgery, from how it is performed step-by-step, to its benefits after the reduction, and the postoperative period.

However, if you have any questions about this treatment or need help booking an appointment, please do not hesitate to contact our Operarme Patient Service Team by calling at +34 91 141 33 56 or by leaving a message in this contact form.

02. What does gastric sleeve surgery involve?

The gastric sleeve is a bariatric surgery that reduces the size of the stomach and the patient’s appetite.

It is performed laparoscopically, a minimally invasive technique, which means it carries a low risk of medical complications.

Through several small incisions in the abdomen, a large portion of the stomach (between 75% and 80%) is removed in order to create a smaller, tube- or sleeve-shaped stomach.

Despite this significant reduction, the stomach continues to function normally, but its capacity for absorption is lower. This results in a smaller amount of food being consumed, as well as a quicker feeling of fullness.

This procedure also helps to improve or even resolve health issues in the patient such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, or heart disease.

Who is gastric sleeve surgery recommended for?

This bariatric surgery is mainly aimed at people who have tried to lose weight through diets, exercise, and medical treatment without success.

Once these options have been exhausted in patients with obesity or morbid obesity, surgical treatment is considered:

  • Patients with a BMI over 40 (morbid obesity).
  • Patients with a BMI over 35 (obesity) who also have a condition such as high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, etc.

03. How is gastric sleeve surgery performed?

On the scheduled day of the surgery, you will be prepared and taken to the operating theatre, where you will meet again with the specialist surgeon and their medical team.

The anaesthetist will administer general anaesthesia and, once you are asleep, the surgeon will begin the procedure:

  • This surgery is performed laparoscopically: the surgeon makes 4 or 5 small incisions along the abdomen.
  • Through these incisions, the surgical instruments are introduced, along with a camera that projects an image onto a monitor to guide the surgeon throughout the procedure.
  • The surgeon proceeds to remove part of the stomach: a large portion is gradually removed until its size is reduced, shaping the remaining organ into a tubular or “sleeve” form.
  • Finally, the laparoscope and surgical instruments are removed, and the incisions are sutured to complete the procedure.

The surgery usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.

Once the operation is complete, you will be taken to a recovery room, where you will be monitored until you recover from the effects of the anaesthesia, after which you will be transferred to your private room.

The hospital stay is typically 2 days, depending on the patient’s recovery after the surgery.

04. Advantages and disadvantages of gastric sleeve surgery

The main advantage of gastric sleeve surgery is weight loss of between 60% and 70% within the first year (between 12-18 months).

Another clear benefit is the improvement in the patient’s quality of life, self-esteem, and independence, as the procedure not only achieves significant weight loss but also reduces the risk of developing serious health problems (such as heart disease) and leads to improvements in conditions associated with diabetes or high blood pressure.

An additional benefit is the reduction in appetite, as the feeling of fullness after the surgery is reached more quickly, and, with the help of a balanced diet, the patient is able to maintain better control over their weight.

On the other hand, as with any surgical procedure, there may be certain risks or drawbacks as a result of this operation, such as possible gastroesophageal reflux, vitamin and mineral deficiencies if the recommended supplementation is not followed, or potential infections. However, these types of complications are uncommon and occur in only a small number of cases.

Another disadvantage of this surgery, which patients should bear in mind, is that it is irreversible, as the stomach is removed and reduced in size.
