All about gastric bypass surgery in Alicante
Gastric bypass surgery is a surgical procedure in which a small pouch is created in the stomach (20–50 cc) to reduce its capacity, which is then connected to the small intestine to decrease the absorption of fats and nutrients.
This surgery is performed laparoscopically, meaning it is minimally invasive, safe, and allows for a faster recovery compared to conventional techniques.
By reducing the size of the stomach and altering the function of the intestine, the patient consumes less food and feels full more quickly.
At Operarme, we offer gastric bypass surgery for 13.800 €. This price includes everything necessary for the surgery to be carried out safely and to achieve the best possible outcome.
Gastric bypass surgery is performed at the HLA Vistahermosa Clinic under the expertise of the HLA Vistahermosa Bariatric Surgery Team.
-
Who is gastric bypass surgery recommended for?

- Patients with a BMI over 40 kg/m².

Surgical assessment consultation with the HLA Vistahermosa Bariatric Surgery Team
If you are interested in gastric bypass treatment, at Operarme we offer you a free surgical assessment consultation with our Bariatric Surgery specialists in the HLA Vistahermosa Clinic.
During this consultation, the specialist will ask a series of questions to learn about your medical history and current health status.
If you can provide medical reports such as recent blood tests or check-ups, previous medical treatments for weight loss you have undergone, diagnosed conditions, or recent test results, you should do so, as the more information the specialist has about your case, the more accurate their diagnosis will be and the better they will be able to determine the most suitable treatment for you.
The bariatric surgery specialist will also answer all your questions about this surgical treatment and will determine during the same consultation whether they recommend you for surgery.
If the specialist concludes that you should undergo gastric bypass surgery, they will propose a date for the procedure during the consultation.
If you decide to go ahead with the surgery, our Patient Service Team will contact you the day after your appointment to confirm your details and begin managing your surgical process with the hospital.
If you are interested in having this surgical assessment consultation, please contact our team on +34 91 141 33 56 , by completing a contact form, or by directly requesting your appointment by clicking the “Request appointment” button below:

Preoperative process for gastric bypass surgery
A preoperative assessment is required before the procedure to ensure that the patient is in a suitable condition to undergo gastric bypass surgery.
The preoperative process involves a series of tests that allow us to thoroughly assess the patient’s state of health:
- Complete blood test.
- Electrocardiogram: to assess the patient’s heart condition and detect any risks that could lead to complications.
- Chest X-ray: necessary to detect the presence of infections and to check whether the trachea is correctly positioned.
After these preoperative tests have been carried out, the patient must attend a consultation with the anaesthetist. In this consultation, it is important to inform them of any medication you are taking, any allergies you may have, previous surgeries, etc.
In addition to performing tests to determine and ensure the patient’s health status before surgery, a psychological assessment is also required, as this surgery involves certain changes in daily habits, particularly eating habits.
It is also important to attend a consultation with a nutritionist, during which the patient will be advised on the dietary changes that will need to be implemented in the days leading up to surgery; this generally involves a low-calorie diet and, in some cases, a liquid diet.
-
How is gastric bypass surgery performed?
On the scheduled day of the surgery, you will be prepared and taken to the operating theatre, where you will meet the HLA Vistahermosa Bariatric Surgery Team and their medical team.
The anaesthetist will administer general anaesthesia and, once you are asleep, the surgeon will begin the procedure:
- This surgery is performed laparoscopically: the surgeon makes 4 to 6 small incisions along the abdomen.
- Through these incisions, the surgical instruments are introduced, along with a camera that projects an image onto a monitor to guide the surgeon during the operation.
- The surgeon creates the gastric pouch, separated from the rest of the stomach, which will help limit the amount of food that can be consumed.
- Next, the small intestine is divided to connect a section of it to the gastric pouch that has been created. The remaining intestine is reconnected further down to form a circuit that allows the passage of food and digestive juices.
- Finally, the laparoscope and surgical instruments are removed, and the incisions are sutured to complete the procedure.
This surgery can take between 90 and 150 minutes.
Once the operation is complete, the patient is transferred to a recovery room, where they are monitored until they recover from the effects of the anaesthesia, and are then moved to their private room.
The hospital stay lasts between 2 and 4 days, depending on the patient’s progress after the operation.
-
Postoperative care and recovery after gastric bypass surgery
After being discharged from the hospital, you will return home and must follow your doctor’s instructions for a full recovery.
During the first few days, you should follow a liquid diet and begin to get used to eating small portions.
It is also important to take the medication prescribed by your doctor (generally painkillers) and to avoid strenuous activities during the first month. Gentle exercise can usually be started 3–4 weeks after hospital discharge.
Within about 4–6 weeks, you should gradually progress—always under your doctor’s guidance—from a liquid diet to purées and soft foods, eventually moving on to an adapted solid diet.
All of these dietary guidelines will be provided by the specialist before you are discharged from the hospital.
Patients must commit to making long-term changes to their eating habits after surgery.
You will also need to attend a postoperative follow-up consultation with the surgeon to monitor your progress and recovery after the operation.
Full recovery after gastric bypass surgery is estimated to take between 6 months and 1 year.
However, you may be able to resume your normal daily activities 4–6 weeks after the surgery.
