Information of Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass surgery is a bariatric procedure that reduces the size of the stomach by combining restrictive and malabsorptive techniques.

This surgical technique not only reduces the stomach’s capacity but also modifies the function of the small intestine through the bypass method, which decreases the absorption of fats and nutrients.

By reducing the size of the stomach and altering the function of the intestine, the patient consumes less food and feels full more quickly.

At Operarme, we offer gastric bypass surgery for 13.800 €. This price includes everything necessary for the surgery to be carried out safely and to achieve the best possible outcome.

Among the services included in the fixed price of this surgery, Operarme provides medical complications insurance covering the 30 days following the procedure. This insurance covers possible eventualities that may arise after the surgery, such as the need to extend the hospital stay → You can read all the conditions here.

On this page, we will detail all the relevant information about this bariatric surgery, from how it is performed step by step, to its benefits after the reduction, and the postoperative period.

However, if you have any questions about this treatment or need help booking an appointment, please do not hesitate to contact our Operarme Patient Service Team by calling at +34 91 141 33 56 or leaving a message in this contact form.

02. What does gastric bypass surgery involve?

Gastric bypass surgery is a surgical procedure in which a small pouch is created in the stomach (20–50 cc) to reduce its capacity, which is then connected to the small intestine to decrease the absorption of fats and nutrients.

This surgery is performed laparoscopically, meaning it is minimally invasive, safe, and allows for a faster recovery compared to conventional techniques.

Despite the reduced capacity, the stomach and intestine continue to function normally, but with lower absorption capacity. This results in less food being consumed, as well as a quicker feeling of fullness.

Who is gastric bypass surgery recommended for?

This type of bariatric surgery is generally recommended for patients with obesity or morbid obesity who have unsuccessfully tried to lose weight through diet, medication, and exercise, and whose body mass index is as follows:

  • Patients with a BMI over 40 kg/m².
  • Patients with a BMI over 35 kg/m² who also have conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, or arterial disease.
  • Patients suffering from severe gastroesophageal reflux disease.

03. How is gastric bypass surgery performed?

On the scheduled day of the surgery, you will be prepared and taken to the operating theatre, where you will meet the specialist surgeon and their medical team.

The anaesthetist will administer general anaesthesia and, once you are asleep, the surgeon will begin the procedure:

  • This surgery is performed laparoscopically: the surgeon makes 4 to 6 small incisions along the abdomen.
  • Through these incisions, the surgical instruments are introduced, along with a camera that projects an image onto a monitor to guide the surgeon during the operation.
  • The surgeon creates the gastric pouch, separated from the rest of the stomach, which will help limit the amount of food that can be consumed.
  • Next, the small intestine is divided to connect a section of it to the gastric pouch that has been created. The remaining intestine is reconnected further down to form a circuit that allows the passage of food and digestive juices.
  • Finally, the laparoscope and surgical instruments are removed, and the incisions are sutured to complete the procedure.

This surgery may take between 90 and 150 minutes.

Once the operation is complete, the patient is transferred to a recovery room, where they are monitored until they recover from the effects of the anaesthesia, and are then moved to their private room.

The hospital stay lasts between 2 and 3 days, depending on the patient’s progress after the operation.

04. Advantages and disadvantages of gastric bypass surgery

The main advantage of gastric bypass surgery is weight loss of between 70% and 80% within 12–18 months after the operation.

Another clear benefit is the improvement in the patient’s quality of life, self-esteem, and independence, as it not only results in significant weight loss but also brings improvements in conditions associated with type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, and high blood pressure.

Another benefit is the reduction in appetite, as the feeling of fullness after surgery is reached more quickly. With the help of a balanced diet, the patient is able to maintain better control over their weight.

In addition, compared to gastric sleeve surgery, gastric bypass carries a lower risk of regaining weight in the long term.

On the other hand, as with any surgical procedure, there may be certain risks or drawbacks arising from this operation, as it is a more complex and longer procedure compared to gastric sleeve surgery, for example.

Another drawback is the possibility of nutritional deficiencies after surgery (vitamin B12, calcium, iron, and folic acid) and the resulting need to take vitamin and mineral supplements for life.

However, these types of complications are not common and occur in only a small number of cases.

A further drawback of this surgery, which patients should bear in mind, is that it is only partially reversible (although reversing it is a complex process).
