Information of Radiofrequency Ablation for Varicose Veins (both legs)

01. Everything you need to know about varicose veins treatment with radiofrequency

Radiofrequency treatment for varicose veins is a minimally invasive technique performed through a small puncture in the saphenous vein.

This procedure is carried out on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia. You attend the medical centre and, once the treatment is completed, you return home just a few hours later. In most cases, a compression stocking is worn, and you can resume a completely normal lifestyle.

02. Why is varicose vein surgery in both legs necessary?

Opting for endovenous thermal ablation by radiofrequency is recommended not only for aesthetic reasons, but in most cases also for medical reasons.

Among the medical reasons, specialists perform varicose vein treatments to prevent future complications associated with this condition, such as the potential development of thrombosis and the risk of pulmonary embolism.

In addition, surgery helps reduce the risk of bleeding due to vein rupture and long-term complications such as atrophy and skin pigmentation around the feet and ankles, which can lead to ulceration.

Varicose veins, causes and symptoms

Varicose veins are a condition that can affect the general population, although women are more likely to suffer from it — with around 70% of women over the age of 50 affected.

Varicose veins appear when veins become elongated or widened and are usually a sign of a circulatory issue known as chronic venous insufficiency. In some cases, it may develop into more serious health problems and is also associated with an unsightly appearance of the lower limbs.

Varicose veins are also known as tired leg syndrome or heavy legs syndrome.

The appearance of varicose veins is usually caused by a combination of factors, the most common being:

  • Genetic inheritance
  • Hormonal changes
  • Pregnancy
  • Sedentary lifestyle or obesity

Specifically in women, the development of varicose veins is often linked to increased fragility of the vein walls and valves due to anatomical and physiological characteristics.

The most common and significant symptoms of affected saphenous veins include:

  • Heaviness and swelling in the legs
  • Night-time cramps
  • Pain in the affected venous areas

What is radiofrequency?

Radiofrequency is a technique that uses heat to close the affected vein. It offers a highly selective action on the vein with minimal inflammation, and has shown better outcomes than laser treatment.

Radiofrequency applies heat via a catheter inserted into the targeted area through a small puncture.

This technique is particularly recommended for patients who need to return quickly to work, as it meets all the necessary requirements and allows for full recovery in an average of 2 to 5 days.

Consultation with the vascular specialist

On the day of your consultation, you should bring the documents indicated in the emails sent to you when you booked the appointment — this is essentially a consultation voucher. Don’t worry, you’ll also receive a reminder the day before your appointment.

Once at the consultation, after identifying yourself as an Operarme patient and being introduced to the specialist, the medical interview will begin. During the appointment, the doctor will:

  • Ask about your lifestyle habits and any discomfort you’re experiencing.
  • Review your Eco-doppler ultrasound results.
  • Perform a physical examination.

After the consultation, if both you and the doctor agree to proceed with surgery, all the necessary arrangements will be made to carry out the varicose vein operation using radiofrequency.

Following the consultation, Operarme's Patient Service Team will assist you with every step of the surgical process and help solve any questions you may have.

04. Step-by-step radiofrequency treatment for varicose veins in both legs

On the day of the procedure, you must go to the hospital and present the required documents at the admissions desk. You’ll then be taken to a waiting area, followed by a preoperative room where you will be given surgical clothing.

Once you have changed, you will be accompanied to the operating theatre, where you will meet the angiologist you previously saw during the consultation, along with a member of the nursing team who will assist during the procedure.

Radiofrequency treatment for varicose veins is performed under local anaesthesia and lasts approximately 60 minutes.

Once in the operating room, the doctor will instruct you on how to position yourself on the table before administering the anaesthetic.

In this procedure, local anaesthesia is used, followed by the following steps:

  1. Once the anaesthesia takes effect, the specialist uses ultrasound guidance to insert a small catheter into the affected vein through a minor puncture or incision.
  2. Using this catheter, which emits radiofrequency energy, controlled heat is applied to the wall of the damaged vein to seal it.
  3. Once the varicose veins have been treated, the specialist removes the equipment and applies dressings to the access points.
  4. The same process is then repeated on the second leg.

The radiofrequency technique is painless, although local anaesthesia or sedation can be used to help the patient remain relaxed.

After the endovenous thermal ablation with radiofrequency, symptoms such as pain, swelling, bruising, and heaviness in the legs typically disappear immediately.

Moreover, following surgery, blood that previously flowed through the affected vein is redirected to healthy veins, restoring normal circulatory function.

05. Benefits of radiofrequency varicose veins treatment (both legs)

Undergoing radiofrequency ablation for varicose veins in both legs offers significant benefits, both aesthetically — the varicose veins disappear completely — and medically, as circulatory problems and uncomfortable symptoms are resolved. Other key advantages include:

  • It provides a safe, minimally invasive solution for varicose veins.
  • It is an outpatient procedure, meaning that after the treatment, you can walk out of the clinic and go home on your own.
  • The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, which allows you to return home straight after the procedure.
  • The precision of the radiofrequency technique ensures that it targets only the affected vein walls, without damaging surrounding tissues. This improves safety and minimises risk.
  • Most people are able to return to work and normal activities within 24–48 hours following the procedure.
  • Since the vein is not physically removed, the recovery is significantly shorter and less painful than with traditional varicose vein surgery — you can expect to be fully recovered within just 2 to 5 days.
  • Above all, the main advantage is that it effectively resolves the problem and allows you to enjoy life free of discomfort.
