01. All you need to know about Endovenous Laser Varicose Vein Surgery
As you probably know, varicose vein surgery mainly aims to solve all the symptoms and problems associated with this pathology, which are basically pain and discomfort in the area. For this, there are several techniques, such as the conventional technique of saphenectomy or stripping or the varicose vein surgery with endovenous laser, the latter being the one we will talk about throughout this page.
With regard to laser intervention for varicose veins, it is one of the most modern surgeries for the treatment of these problems, with numerous advantages. Among them, we can highlight the fact that the surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, which allows you to go home walking on your own feet, as well as the fact that it presents immediate and practically total results after a week.
Laser varicose vein surgery involves the introduction of a laser fibre through the affected vein to close it without having to remove it, something that is done in conventional saphenectomy. In the step-by-step section of the surgery, below, we explain what this outpatient procedure consists of.
To give you an idea of how a surgical procedure for varicose veins with endovenous laser on both legs is carried out, in the following sections we will explain how surgery works at Operarme. But first of all, we will talk to you about varicose veins and their symptoms.
02. Reasons for varicose vein surgery
The appearance of varicose veins is due to circulation problems associated mainly with a pathology called chronic venous insufficiency, which causes circulatory deficiencies causing the accumulation of blood in the legs, although it can occur in more areas, dilating and becoming visible, causing the symptoms we all know.
If you are reading this and suffer from severe varicose vein problems, you probably already know all the problems that make you consider surgery to remove varicose veins, as the pain and heaviness are difficult to bear.
Despite this, they are not the only problems that can appear, so below we explain the symptoms that are associated with them, although you will already know some of them:
- They become visible. Both behind the knee and on the inside of the thigh, they usually appear in the early stages of the disease.
- Tiredness and heaviness. Mainly when you spend a long time without moving. This occurs because blood accumulates in the veins of the legs, and it is advisable to walk, exercise and elevate the legs to improve the symptoms.
- Pain. As the vein dilates, any slight friction or blow causes significant pain to the patient, although you probably already know this.
- Night cramps. It is common to notice cramps in the area affected by varicose veins during the night, in some cases being a nuisance for falling asleep.
- Tingling when standing still. When you spend a long time sitting down, during a journey for example, it is common to notice tingling in the area affected by varicose veins. It is not the most annoying symptom, but it is better not to notice it.
- Swelling in the ankles and feet. This is usually due to the difficulty for the blood to return through the affected dilated veins. As the problem progresses, swelling may occur throughout the leg, and lifting the legs and resting is the best way to alleviate it, although the more the problem progresses, the more persistent it will become.
- Skin discolouration. Because of the outflow of blood from the affected veins, blood accumulates and can cause deterioration of the skin and fat, leading to hardening, pain, eczema and inflammation.
They are more common in women than in men, affecting 1 in 4 people.
All these symptoms are associated with the complications of varicose veins, although they are not the most serious. To give you an idea of the complications, as it is likely that your doctor will have mentioned them to you at some point, they are listed below.
03. Complications of varicose veins
- Varicose Thrombosis. It consists of the formation of clots in the leg due to the difficulty of blood circulation.
- Phlebitis. A complication of varicose thrombosis that can lead to deep vein thrombophlebitis, a very serious complication that must be treated immediately due to the dangers it entails, and superficial thrombosis, which has a more favourable prognosis.
- Varicorrhage. Bleeding in the area due to a blow or graze in the area affected by varicose veins.
- Venous ulcers. These form around the ankles and, in addition to pain, can often become infected. In principle, your leg need not be at risk, but if you detect fluid leaking from the area, it is best to see a doctor immediately.
Although in many cases it is possible to postpone surgery and cope with the problems by changing habits, stockings, etc., it is important to consider laser surgery for varicose veins in time, because otherwise more aggressive surgery may be necessary.
Once you know that you have varicose veins and that it is a type of varicose vein that can be operated on, as there are various types of varicose veins depending on their severity (you can read more on the subject here), the best thing to do is to go for a surgical assessment consultation with a Specialist in Angiology and Vascular Surgery to assess your case, get to know him/her and tell you what the best option is for your problem and start the process to solve it.
In this consultation, it is likely to be necessary to perform an Echo-Doppler so that the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Specialist can see exactly all the alterations in the affected veins and determine the best option.
If you need to purchase an Arterial doppler ultrasound for the consultation, you can find more information here.
But first of all, the first thing to do is to request a free surgical assessment consultation at Operarme for laser varicose vein surgery.
04. Request a free assessment consultation for Laser Varicose Vein Surgery (both legs)
If you are considering having endovenous laser varicose vein surgery with us, either because of the price we offer or because of the good recommendations from former patients, we recommend that you first request a free consultation with our specialist in your city so that he can get to know you, familiarise himself with your case and decide together how to solve the problem.
You can do this through the contact form on the website, by calling us on +34 91 141 33 56 or by requesting it directly by clicking on the image below:
Do you need laser varicose vein surgery?
Request a free and immediate appointment with our specialists in vascular surgery
After requesting the appointment through the website, our patient service team will call you to answer any questions you may have about the company, the surgical process, as well as to confirm the date of the appointment.
Once everything has been confirmed, and you will have received all the documentation in the mail, all that remains is to go to the face-to-face consultation with the Specialist in Angiology and Vascular Surgery.
05. Consultation with the Specialist in Vascular Surgery
On the day set for the appointment, you must go to the specialist's office with the documentation indicated in the email we sent you after requesting the appointment, which is basically a voucher for the appointment. In any case, don't worry, you will receive a reminder of the appointment the day before.
Once in the consultation, after identifying yourself as a patient of Operarme, what is known as a medical interview begins, that is, the Specialist will ask you a series of questions about your problem, your lifestyle and the discomfort caused by your varicose veins.
At this point, we recommend that you solve any doubts you may have about the varicose veins, the surgery, the anaesthesia, etc.
After this, a physical examination will be performed and, in some cases, as we have mentioned above, it may be necessary to perform an Echo-Doppler to determine the specific alterations and location of the varicose veins to be taken into account during the laser surgery of varicose veins.
After the consultation, if you and the doctor decide to continue with the process, all the necessary steps will be taken to carry out the varicose vein surgery with an endovenous laser.
Usually, the time between the consultation and the surgery does not usually exceed 7 or 10 days, depending on the availability of the operating theatre, as it is an outpatient procedure with local anaesthesia and does not require a pre-operative procedure unless the specialist indicates otherwise.
After the consultation, Operarme’s Patient Service Team will help you with all the steps to follow before the surgery, as well as answering any queries you may have.
06. Varicose Vein Surgery with Endovenous Laser: Step by Step
On the day of your surgery, you must go to the hospital and hand in the necessary paperwork at the admissions desk. Don't worry, a member of the Patient Service Team will have explained everything to you beforehand.
After the paperwork, you will be escorted to a room where you will wait for a while until you are taken to the operating theatre. Before this, you will change into your surgical clothes in an adjoining room and then you will be taken to the operating theatre.
There, the specialist with whom you had your consultation and a member of the nursing team who will assist you during the intervention will be waiting for you.
Once in the operating theatre, the specialist will tell you how to position yourself on the stretcher for the surgery. Then the anaesthetic is applied, which is local in this case, so you will be aware of everything that happens during the surgery. Relax, it will be worth it after all.
As soon as the local anaesthetic takes effect, the laser varicose vein surgery begins:
- The surgeon will first make a small incision in the upper leg, near the groin, to gain access to the affected vein. This incision is minimal, only a few millimetres, just large enough to insert a thin laser fibre that will allow the surgeon to solve the problem.
- Through this incision, the laser fibre is inserted through the vein until it reaches the area of the vein that has widened to form the varicose vein.
- Once in the area to be treated, the doctor will activate the laser so that the heat given off by the laser will cause the vein to fold and contract, closing it completely and gradually disappearing over time. Once the vein is closed, don't worry, the body will send the blood back to the heart via the other healthy veins in the area, thus eliminating the build-up in the varicose vein and, consequently, the symptoms.
- It is important to highlight the ability of this laser to work backwards, i.e. the doctor inserts the fibre all the way in and "burns" the vein backwards, allowing greater precision and preventing the fibre from getting stuck in the vein.
- When the varicose vein surgery specialist has solved the problem, the fibre will be removed through the upper incision made and, if necessary, a stitch will be placed in the incision, although this is not usual.
- As the surgery is performed on both legs, after the surgery has been performed on one leg, it will be performed on the other.
The duration of the surgery can range from 60 to 90 minutes, or even a little longer. This duration will depend on the severity of the problem and, above all, whether the operation is performed on 1 or both legs.
After the surgery, it is recommended to walk for a while to reactivate the circulation in the legs, and this should be done several times during the following days to help with the postoperative period and recovery.
After that, you will be able to walk home with immediate results. It is recommended that you take a couple of days to recover, but if you are unable to do so, there is no problem in resuming your daily life immediately. You can ask the Specialist in consultation about it.
Now that you know what endovenous laser varicose vein surgery consists of from start to finish, if you are convinced that you want to solve the discomfort of varicose veins once and for all, you can request a free surgical assessment consultation with one of our specialists by clicking below.

07. Advantages of endovenous laser versus saphenectomy
- It allows varicose veins to be resolved in a safe and minimally invasive way, as only a minimal incision is required.
- Varicose vein surgery with endovenous laser makes it possible to eliminate severe varicose veins, making it a clear alternative to classic varicose vein surgery.
- It is an outpatient surgery, i.e. after the laser varicose vein surgery, you go home on your own feet.
- The anaesthesia is local, so, as we mentioned in the previous point, the patient can go home immediately after surgery.
- The precision of the laser for the treatment of varicose veins means that it only acts on the vein walls to be treated and does not affect the surrounding tissues, which provides greater safety and minimises risks.
- As far as returning to work is concerned, it is practically immediate, as it can be a 24-48 hour break if necessary.
- As it is not necessary to remove the vein, the postoperative period is much shorter and with less pain than conventional varicose vein surgery.
In addition to all these advantages, the main one is that it solves the problem and allows you to live again without any kind of discomfort.
On the other hand, as with any other type of surgery, there are a series of risks which, although minimal, you should be aware of when deciding whether or not to have the surgery:
Risks of laser varicose vein surgery
As with any other surgery, however unusual they may be, there are some risks to be aware of.
These risks may be associated with the surgery itself or with the patient's previous health:
- General complications of surgery. In this case, it is unusual for them to occur due to the fact that the anaesthesia is local and that they are usually associated with patients who already have previous pathologies, which the specialist will explain to you better in consultation. These complications are vascular accidents, renal failure or cardiorespiratory disorders.
- Specific complications of laser varicose vein surgery. These are not very common, but can be nerve lesions that leave tingling or pain, haematomas that can leave residual stains, infection in the wound, swelling, scarring, venous thrombosis or arterial lesions.
In order to avoid any of these problems, it is important that the surgery is carried out by an experienced Varicose Vein Surgery Specialist in an operating theatre with the appropriate facilities, something that is guaranteed when you have any surgery with Operarme.
In addition, at Operarme all our surgeries include medical complications insurance to cover the cost of any eventuality.
If you would like more information on this subject, you can contact our patient service team so that they can answer any questions you may have.
08. Postoperative period after laser varicose vein surgery
As we have already mentioned in the advantages area, the postoperative period is very simple. After the surgery, you can walk home about 2 hours after the intervention without any problem, and it is even advisable to walk to restore circulation.
It is a very simple postoperative period, with hardly any discomfort for a week, by which time you will have fully recovered and can return to work 24 to 48 hours after the surgery.
Before leaving the clinic, you will be given a day to return for a check-up.
