Hysterosalpingography is a minimally invasive imaging procedure that uses X-rays together with a contrast medium to examine the uterine cavity and the fallopian tubes.

For the Hysterosalpingography test to be carried out, it is strictly necessary to attend between the 5th and 11th day after your menstrual period. Therefore, you must contact the centre before your appointment to coordinate and schedule it within that time frame.

General Recommendations:

Special situations to take into account:

• The examination will be performed between 6 and 8 days after the start of the menstrual period.

• Optionally, one 5 mg Valium tablet may be taken two hours before the test.
• Attend the hospital if, after the test, there is heavy vaginal bleeding (similar to a menstrual period) or fever (above 38°C).

1. You will lie on an X-ray table and the specialist will disinfect the cervical area. A speculum is inserted into the vagina to keep the cervix open.
2. Through a small catheter, a contrast medium is introduced into the uterus. This liquid will fill the uterine cavity and pass through the fallopian tubes.
3. As the contrast flows, several X-rays are taken to visualise the outline of the uterus and the tubes, allowing the specialist to identify any possible blockages or abnormalities.
4. Once all the necessary images have been taken, the speculum and the catheter are removed, and you will be able to rest briefly before returning to your normal activities.
