01. What does a urology consultation consist of?
The primary objective of a urology consultation is the study, diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions associated with the urinary tract, adrenal glands and retroperitoneum in both women and men, as well as the treatment of pathologies related to the male reproductive system.
The age range of patients attending a urologist's consultation is quite broad, ranging from young patients with problems such as phimosis, varicocele or signs of infertility, to older patients who commonly present prostate issues and require regular visits and check-ups.
At Operarme, we offer a Urology consultation + Urological ultrasound service aimed at individuals experiencing symptoms such as acute pain, constant discomfort or inflammation due to alterations in the bladder, kidneys, prostate or testicular area.
Step by step of a urology consultation with urological ultrasound
- Medical interview: After introductions, the patient explains the reason for the consultation to the urologist, including what discomfort they have, where it hurts, the reason they want a check-up or why they are seeking a second opinion on a previous diagnosis made by another specialist. Likewise, the urology specialist will ask questions about the problem during the conversation. It is recommended that the patient brings results of previous tests they have undergone, such as results from a spermogram or a prostate or testicular ultrasound.
- Physical examination and ultrasound performance: The doctor will first visually examine the area to check for cysts, lumps or inflammation and, once the physical examination is complete, will proceed to perform the urological ultrasound.
- Diagnosis and treatment: After completing the urological ultrasound and the physical examination, the urologist will be able to conclude the diagnosis and recommend a treatment for the patient's medical problem. If necessary, the doctor may request complementary tests to determine the definitive diagnosis.

02. What is a urological ultrasound?
A urological ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows the specialist to visualise the organs of the urinary system and the male reproductive tract and diagnose any potential anomalies in real time. It is performed using a transducer that is carefully glided over the lower abdomen and pelvis after applying a conductive gel: it is a painless test.
The body parts analysed are the kidneys, bladder, prostate and testicles (in men).
What is detected in a urological ultrasound?
This ultrasound helps the urologist detect genital and urinary anomalies in:
- Kidneys and urinary tract: malformations, obstructions, kidney stones, tumours, kidney infections...
- Bladder: bladder stones, potential bladder tumours, thickening of the wall, urinary retention...
- Prostate: enlargement of the prostate, prostatic inflammation, nodules.
- Testicles: suspected hydrocele, varicocele, cysts, tumours or inflammation in the testicles.
Is any prior preparation necessary for a urological ultrasound?
Yes, it is important to attend on the day of the test with a full bladder and not to urinate before the procedure, as this allows the specialist to better visualise the bladder and urinary tract.
How long do the ultrasound results take?
As it is a test performed in real time and during the consultation, the patient receives the results instantly: the specialist discusses what is seen on the screen with the patient during the examination.
How long does a urological ultrasound last?
This test lasts approximately 10-20 minutes, always depending on what the doctor needs to observe.
