01. What does a urology consultation consist of?
A Urology consultation aims to study, diagnose and treat medical problems associated with the urinary tract, adrenal glands and retroperitoneum in both women and men, as well as the treatment of pathologies associated with the male reproductive system.
The age range of patients attending a urologist's consultation is quite broad, as it covers everything from young patients presenting with problems such as phimosis, varicocele or signs of infertility, to older patients who usually present with prostate problems and require regular visits and medical records.
At Operarme, we offer the Urology Consultation + Testicular ultrasound service aimed at people who are suffering from pain, inflammation or other symptoms in the testicular area. It is also aimed at patients who have infertility or erection problems and need to evaluate their reproductive health with a specialist.
Step by step of a Urology consultation with ultrasound
- Medical interview: After introductions, the patient explains the reason for the consultation to the urologist, what discomfort they have, where it hurts, the reason why they want a check-up or why they are requesting a second opinion on a previous diagnosis made by another specialist. Likewise, the urology specialist will ask questions about their problem during the conversation. It is recommended that the patient brings results of previous tests they have had, such as, for example, results of a spermogram or a urological ultrasound.
- Physical examination and ultrasound: The doctor will check the testicular area to check for cysts, lumps or inflammation and once the physical examination has been completed, they will proceed to perform the testicular ultrasound.
- Diagnosis and treatment: After completing the testicular ultrasound and the physical examination, the urologist will be able to conclude the diagnosis and recommend a treatment for the patient's medical problem. In the event that it is necessary, the doctor may request complementary tests to determine the definitive diagnosis.
02. What is detected in a testicular ultrasound?
A Testicular ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows the specialist to diagnose and evaluate various testicular conditions: from inflammation, pain, masses, testicular torsion, hydrocele (accumulation of fluid around the testicles) and varicocele (abnormal dilation of the veins in the scrotum).
It is performed with a transducer that is carefully glided over the scrotal area after applying conductive gel: it is a painless test.
During the test, the specialist can detect through the images if there are abnormalities in the internal structures of the testicles, epididymis (the tube that collects sperm) and scrotum. The purpose of this test is to diagnose whether there are tumours or lumps, testicular torsions, infections, trauma, dilated veins or fluid accumulation in the testicular area and thus determine the causes of infertility or acute pain in the patient.
Is any prior preparation necessary to perform a testicular ultrasound?
No, it is not necessary to fast or carry out any special preparation.
What happens if the patient has an erection during the testicular ultrasound?
Having an erection during a testicular ultrasound is a natural physical response and does not mean anything.
