What does a paediatric consultation consist of?
A paediatric consultation consists of a medical encounter between the child (the patient), their parents and the paediatric specialist to evaluate the well-being, development and physical growth of the minor.
Generally, during a paediatric consultation with the HLA Vistahermosa Clinic the following procedures are carried out:
- Clinical interview with the parents/guardians: the first step when starting the consultation is to consult with the patient's parents or caregivers about the general health and current behaviour of the patient. Questions are addressed regarding:
- Current symptoms.
- Medical records.
- Diagnosed or previous illnesses.
- Feeding and sleeping behaviour.
- Allergies.
- If currently taking medication.
- The patient's vaccination schedule, etc.
- Physical examination of the patient: the paediatrician continues with the physical assessment of the patient to evaluate their general condition and development. They perform a general review of the minor's body, checking their weight, height, temperature, blood pressure and heart rate, and additionally check the ears, eyes, palpate the patient's abdomen, and auscultate the heart and lungs.
The specialist also evaluates the psychomotor development and growth of the child, assessing aspects such as:
- Language development.
- Behaviour.
- Learning.
- Motor development.
- Social skills.
- Recommendations to the parents and conclusion of the assessment: after completing the clinical interview with the minor's parents/guardians and the physical examination of the patient, the paediatrician will establish a diagnosis and medical treatment in the event that the patient has attended the consultation due to the presence of symptoms, or on the other hand, the paediatrician will advise the parents/guardians, resolve their doubts, and if necessary, request complementary studies to expand the clinical diagnosis of the child.

When is it necessary to attend a paediatric consultation?
Two different situations can be established in which it is recommended or necessary to take the minor to a paediatric consultation in the HLA Vistahermosa Clinic:
Attending for a follow-up or review consultation
This type of consultation for the prevention and control of the child's development tends to be frequent during the minor's first year of life, and later becomes occasional visits.
When the minor is 1-3 years old, periodic reviews every 6 months are recommended, and from the age of 4 onwards, these visits can begin to be annual, provided they do not require attendance due to the presence of symptoms and discomfort in the child.
Attending due to the presence of symptoms or illness
It is essential, during this stage of a child's growth and development, to request an appointment with a paediatrician if they present symptoms such as:
- Fever, especially in children aged 2-3 months, and in the case of older children, if they are unable to bring the fever down within 2-3 days.
- Frequent vomiting or diarrhoea.
- Difficulty breathing well.
- Persistent cough.
- Striking changes in their behaviour, such as sleep disturbances, lack of appetite, or inconsolable crying.
- Also when rashes or skin irritation appear.
