What does an ophthalmology check-up with the Oftalvist Clinic Lleida | HLA Perpetuo Socorro consist of?
An ophthalmology check-up is a medical consultation carried out by a Ophthalmology specialist in the Oftalvist Clinic Lleida | HLA Perpetuo Socorro, aimed at assessing a patient's visual acuity.
To carry out this check-up, different ophthalmological tests are performed to analyse both the external and internal structures of the eyes in order to detect conditions or diseases.
The tests generally performed during an ophthalmology check-up with the Oftalvist Team in Lleida are detailed below:
Graduation
This is the most common test when performing an eye examination. This test is used to determine the patient's visual acuity and detect conditions such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism or presbyopia.
Using an autorefractor and a phoropter (a visor with different lenses), the specialist will test various lenses while asking the patient to read numbers and letters from a screen to check the sharpness of the patient's vision.
OCT
Also known as Optical Coherence Tomography, this is a quick and painless eye scan that uses light to take detailed, microscopic images of the retina and the optic nerve.
Thanks to this test, ophthalmologists can diagnose major diseases early, such as macular degeneration or glaucoma, which can lead to vision loss over time.
As mentioned, it is a painless test in which the patient rests their chin on the OCT device and stares at a point of light for a few seconds.
Sometimes, if the specialist deems it necessary, this test is performed by first dilating the pupil.Pachymetry
If the ophthalmologist suspects glaucoma after performing the OCT test, a pachymetry test is used to assess the health of the cornea with greater precision.
It is a painless test that measures corneal thickness to check for any alteration in the intraocular pressure measurement. This test is also performed on patients undergoing laser surgery for myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism.
To perform this test, anaesthetic eye drops are usually administered to the patient to relieve any potential discomfort. With the help of a probe device (pachymeter), the ophthalmologist gently touches the surface of the eye to calculate corneal thickness.
Biometry
An ocular biometry test measures the exact size of the eye (from the cornea to the retina).
This test is usually performed prior to intraocular surgery, where the natural crystalline lens is replaced with an artificial lens.Biometry allows precise measurement of the intraocular lenses used in cataract or presbyopia surgery.
Like the previous tests, biometry is a quick and painless procedure in which the patient sits in front of an optical examination device and must stare at a point while a beam of light measures the eye from front to back in a matter of seconds.
Retinography
A retinography test consists of taking a high-resolution, colour photograph of the fundus (the back of the eye). This "photograph" provides a detailed view of the retina, the optic nerve and the blood vessels.
It is a painless test in which a retinograph (a special high-resolution camera) literally takes a photograph of the patient's eye while they look at a fixed point.
This test helps in the early prevention of macular degeneration, optic nerve damage or, in the case of patients with diabetes, the prevention of retinal damage due to high blood sugar levels.
It is important to note that these 5 ophthalmological tests are not always performed during a check-up; all tests are only carried out if the specialist deems it necessary based on the assessment and the potential conditions presented by the patient.
