The speciality of Neurology is responsible for the study, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles).

The aim of a neurology consultation is to identify the symptoms and determine a diagnosis and treatment for the condition the patient is suffering from.

Below, we detail the most common symptoms and diseases that can be treated by a neurologist, and how you can request a Consultation with a Neurologist with one of our specialists.

02. What to expect from a Neurologist consultation?

The consultation with a Neurology specialist is a medical appointment in which the patient’s clinical and family history is assessed, and the symptoms they may be experiencing are taken into account in order to reach a diagnosis and determine the most appropriate treatment.

A neurology consultation typically takes place as follows:

  1. Interview with the specialist: the patient attends the appointment in person and, to begin the assessment, the doctor conducts an interview in which they ask a series of questions to understand the patient’s clinical and family history. Family history such as dementia, Parkinson’s or epilepsy; clinical background including diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease or hypertension; regular medication; lifestyle; and details about their symptoms are among the key aspects the specialist needs to evaluate in order to make a diagnosis.
  2. Physical examination: the neurologist usually performs a series of tests to assess the patient’s coordination, reflexes, memory, muscle strength and sensitivity. They will also measure blood pressure, carry out auscultation and check the patient’s heart rate.
  3. Diagnosis and treatment: after reviewing the clinical history and performing the physical examination, the specialist concludes the consultation with a diagnosis and possible treatment options to initiate a therapeutic plan. The appointment may end with different outcomes:
    • Medication for a specific condition, such as migraines.
    • Request for further tests, for example a brain MRI scan or a cranial CT scan.
    • Follow-up appointment to review the results of the tests requested by the specialist.

03. When is it necessary to attend a consultation with a neurologist?

There are various symptoms a patient may experience, some of which require more urgent attention than others. Below, we outline some of the most common ones:

  • Frequent headaches of varying intensity.
  • Vertigo causing dizziness and loss of balance.
  • Tremors or reduced control and rigidity in body movements.
  • Episodes of memory loss or disorientation.
  • Changes in speech or vision.
  • Sleep disorders such as severe daytime drowsiness.
  • Persistent tingling or cramping in any part of the body, particularly in the hands and feet.
  • Neuropathic pain, including electric shock-like sensations or burning pain.

These symptoms are among the most typical signs of a possible neurological condition. For this reason, they require a scheduled appointment with a neurologist to obtain a diagnosis and begin appropriate monitoring and management of any degenerative symptoms that should be treated promptly.

In neurological conditions, early intervention is essential to prevent future complications.

However, there are also a number of severe symptoms that require urgent medical attention at a hospital. Below, we list some of them:

  • Sudden weakness in the face, arms or legs (often affecting just one side of the body).
  • Loss of vision in one or both eyes.
  • Sudden difficulty speaking or understanding, or a sudden drooping of the mouth.
  • Loss of consciousness or seizures.
  • A sudden change in body movement, particularly when walking.

If a patient experiences any of these sudden symptoms, they must seek emergency medical care.

04. What additional tests might a neurologist request?

Depending on the conclusions the neurologist has reached during the initial assessment, they may request a range of neurological tests to investigate or clarify specific aspects before prescribing any treatment:

  • Cranial or cervical spine CT scan.
  • Brain MRI scan, which is the most common imaging test and provides the specialist with the most detailed information when assessing conditions such as brain tumours, lesions, multiple sclerosis or degenerative diseases.
  • Electroencephalogram, a test that records the brain’s electrical activity.
  • Electromyogram (EMG), useful for assessing peripheral nerves and muscle function.

If, after your Neurologist consultation, the specialist prescribes any of these tests, at Operarme our Patient Service team is available to help arrange your test at the hospital under preferential pricing.
