01. What does a Dermatology Consultation involve?

A dermatology consultation is a medical assessment in which a specialist dermatologist evaluates and diagnoses conditions or diseases that may affect the skin, nails and hair.

What can be diagnosed in a dermatology consultation?

In a consultation with a dermatologist, the following conditions can be detected, diagnosed and treated:

  • Skin conditions such as: acne, psoriasis, dermatitis, cases of urticaria, rosacea, or lesions such as papules.
  • Skin infections caused by fungi or viruses, such as warts, herpes, or impetigo.
  • Diagnosis of skin cancer: the specialist can diagnose the presence of melanoma and carcinoma, or moles that may be suspicious.
  • Nail problems such as fungal infections.
  • Alopecia or hair loss caused by scalp-related issues.
  • Hyperpigmentation of the skin, such as skin blemishes.
  • The appearance of lipomas or cysts on the skin.

This list includes the most common conditions diagnosed during a consultation with a dermatologist, although it may also cover less common diseases such as vitiligo or hidradenitis suppurativa.

02. What happens in a Dermatology Consultation? Step-by-step guide to a visit

When a patient attends a Dermatology Consultation, the specialist follows a series of steps to assess the condition presented and determine a diagnosis and treatment by the end of the visit:

  • Patient interview: the dermatologist begins the consultation by asking the patient about the reason for the visit: what is concerning them, which area of the body is affected, how the condition has evolved, etc. The specialist also asks a series of questions to understand the patient’s personal context and whether there is a personal and/or family history related to the medical issue. It is also very important to know whether the patient takes medication regularly and which type, as in some cases this may be related to the condition.
  • Physical examination: the dermatologist carries out a physical examination to assess the lesions and their characteristics, as well as a thorough examination of the affected area. In some cases, such as moles, acne or warts, the specialist may use a magnifying device with light (dermoscopy) to examine the lesion in greater detail.
  • Initial assessment and diagnosis: following the assessment, the dermatologist informs the patient whether diagnostic tests or medication are required to treat the condition. In most cases, the consultation concludes with a diagnosis and a treatment plan, which may include topical or oral treatment, hygiene and care recommendations, and above all, photoprotection.
  • Prescription of diagnostic tests: in certain cases, the dermatologist may prescribe diagnostic tests to confirm the diagnosis and make a more informed decision regarding the treatment plan. Below are the most common tests a dermatologist may request:
    • Blood test: to check iron levels, ferritin, thyroid function…
    • If the dermatologist suspects allergic contact dermatitis, the most recommended test is an allergy patch test (epicutaneous test).
    • If the patient presents lumps, an ultrasound scan is usually recommended.
    • In cases of hormonal acne, the dermatologist may refer the patient to a gynaecologist or endocrinologist.

03. Treatments and additional tests after a Dermatology Consultation

Both the treatment prescribed by the specialist and the request for additional tests are based solely on the professional judgement of the dermatology specialist with whom you have your Dermatology Consultation.

As previously mentioned, the treatment proposed by the doctor may vary, as they may prescribe medication, request diagnostic tests, or even provide hygiene and care recommendations that may be aggravating your health issue and could help improve it.

If the specialist recommends undergoing a diagnostic test such as a patch test or an ultrasound scan, at Operarme we make our Patient Service team available to manage your test with the hospital at preferential rates.

If you are interested in having us manage your test, you can contact us directly on +34 91 141 33 56.
