01. What does an allergy consultation consist of?
Allergy is the medical specialty responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases and their reactions to different substances from the external environment, known as allergens.
Allergies can affect multiple parts of the body: from the skin to the digestive tract, the respiratory system, the eyes, or the lips; in severe cases, they can even affect the cardiovascular system.
For this reason, it is important to have regular check-ups and to consult an allergy specialist.
An Allergy Consultation consists of a medical assessment of the symptoms present in a patient that are compatible with allergies, in order to identify the causes triggering those symptoms and to determine a diagnosis and treatment.
This consultation usually involves an interview with the specialist to review the patient’s medical history and symptoms, a physical examination, the request or performance of a diagnostic test such as a prick test, the confirmation of a diagnosis (if possible at that time and if allergy tests have already been carried out for the patient), and finally the prescription of a treatment once a definitive diagnosis has been confirmed.

02. Which conditions can be diagnosed during an allergy consultation?
During a consultation with an allergy specialist, the following allergic reactions can be identified:
- Food allergies: foods such as nuts, shellfish, fruit, dairy products, eggs, etc… which can cause allergic reactions affecting the skin, the digestive system, or even the respiratory system after ingestion.
- Respiratory allergies: allergic reactions to dust, mites, pollen, or animal hair, which can cause rhinitis, conjunctivitis in the eyes, or asthma.
- Skin allergies: the symptoms of this type of skin allergy usually result in atopic dermatitis, cases of urticaria, eczema (contact dermatitis), or wheals. They are mainly caused by allergic reactions to ingredients found in cosmetic products or detergents.
- Insect allergy: specifically to the venom injected by insects through their stings, such as wasps or bees.
- Drug allergies: in this case, an allergic reaction may be caused by a specific component of a medicine; antibiotics, anaesthetics, or anti-inflammatory medicines are among the drugs most likely to trigger an allergic reaction.
These allergies are generally treated with medication, immunotherapy, that is, allergy vaccines, or recommendations for changes in the patient’s lifestyle (always under medical guidance).
03. What does an allergist do during the first consultation?
When a patient attends an allergy consultation for the first time, the specialist follows a series of steps to understand the origin of their symptoms and, by the end of the consultation, determine a diagnosis and treatment plan:
- Medical interview and clinical history: the specialist conducts an interview to understand which symptoms the patient is experiencing, when these symptoms began, and the patient’s personal context in order to identify potential triggers that may cause the allergy (contact with animals, pollen, mites, specific foods, etc).It is also important to review the patient’s medical history (regular medication use or a family history of allergies).
- Physical examination: the specialist may carry out a physical examination to assess signs of inflammation or active allergy in the following parts of the body: eyes, skin, nose, throat, and respiratory system (lung auscultation).
- Initial assessment and diagnosis: after this initial evaluation, the specialist may reach a definitive diagnosis, or may conclude with a suspected diagnosis and request additional tests.
- Prescription of diagnostic tests: the allergist may prescribe different tests depending on the type of symptoms:
- Spirometry, if the symptoms are respiratory.
- Prick test, skin tests in which different allergenic agents are assessed.
- Patch test, in cases of contact dermatitis.
- Blood tests.
- Intradermal tests.
04. Treatments and additional tests after the consultation
Both the treatment prescribed by the specialist and the request for additional tests are based solely on the professional judgement of the allergy specialist with whom you have the consultation.
As previously mentioned, the treatment proposed by the doctor may vary, as it may include prescribing medication, requesting diagnostic tests, or even providing recommendations for changes to your diet or lifestyle habits that may be worsening your health condition and could help improve it.
If the specialist recommends a diagnostic test such as a prick test or a patch test, Operarme makes its Patient Service team available to help manage your test with the hospital at preferential rates.
