NOT Included - Medical prescription
In Spain, a medical prescription is required to undergo any diagnostic test. If you do not have one, you will need to attend a consultation with a specialist beforehand in order to obtain it.
Below, we explain the process step by step, whether you have a prescription or not:
You have a medical prescription
- Purchase the test as normal.
- Immediately afterwards, we will send an email to the address used for the purchase with instructions on how to send us your medical prescription so that we can arrange your appointment.
- With the medical prescription, we can verify that the diagnostic test purchased corresponds to the one indicated by your specialist.
- We will arrange your appointment with a confirmed date and time so that you can attend your preferred hospital to undergo the test.
You do not have a medical prescription
If you do not have a medical prescription, Operarme can arrange a consultation with one of our specialists at a preferential price (subject to availability in your area). Contact us for more information.
During the consultation, you will be able to inform the doctor about the test you need. They may request a medical report related to your condition, if required for the test you need to undergo.
Remember: on the day of your test, you must bring and present your Operarme purchase voucher and the medical prescription.
-
Refund of the amount if the test is not carried out
If, after purchasing the test, you decide not to proceed or the appointment date does not suit your needs, you may request a refund. In these cases, we will reimburse the full amount of your purchase without any issue.
To do so, please contact our Patient Service team before the appointment date, and we will arrange the refund quickly and easily.

What is an overnight polysomnography study?
An overnight polysomnography study is a non-invasive and painless test that helps analyse a patient’s sleep architecture by recording different bodily functions while the patient sleeps, specifically over approximately 8 hours.
This test is generally carried out in a hospital or in a medical centre with a sleep unit or laboratory.
It is a reference test in the field of Neurophysiology for diagnosing sleep disorders in a patient.
Primarily, this comprehensive sleep study aims to diagnose sleep apnoea syndrome, insomnia, parasomnias, narcolepsy or involuntary eye and leg movements.
-
Which patients is this sleep study intended for?
This test is generally indicated for patients who meet one or more of the following characteristics:
- Frequent and intense snoring (with breathing pauses, gasping or snorting).
- Excessive daytime sleepiness.
- Frequent awakenings during the night and lack of restorative sleep.
- Abnormal movements during sleep: whether ocular, or muscular such as involuntary leg movements.
- Unusual behaviours, such as sleepwalking or talking or even shouting while asleep.
- Suspicion of sleep apnoea syndrome, also known as OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnoea).
- Suspicion of narcolepsy or parasomnias.
This test may also be prescribed as a complementary study for patients with cardiovascular conditions, morbid obesity or type 2 diabetes who have symptoms related to sleep apnoea.
-
How is a full overnight polysomnography study performed at the Hospital Universitario HLA Moncloa?
On the day of your scheduled appointment, you attend the Hospital Universitario HLA Moncloa in the late afternoon or evening, wearing comfortable clothing and having had dinner.
This test does not require any special prior preparation; however, you should avoid caffeine and alcohol on the day of the study, as well as attend in comfortable clothing (pyjamas) and with clean hair (that is, without gel or hairspray).
Once in the private room where the polysomnography is carried out, you prepare to go to bed while the technicians prepare you for the test:
- First, electrodes are placed on your scalp, chin, legs and at the outer corners (near) your eyes. The technician also places elastic bands around your abdomen and chest, a pulse oximeter on one finger, a nasal cannula to measure airflow and electrodes to record heart activity.
- Once you are asleep, the analysis begins, with the technician monitoring you from an adjoining room. Data are collected on your brain waves, eye and/or muscle movements, heart rate, breathing and body position.
- In some cases, the test is recorded on video to document unusual behaviours or movements.
- The following morning, when you wake up, the electrodes and sensors used for the test are removed and the study is concluded.
It is a painless and safe test. You can resume your daily activities without any problems once the test has finished.
What happens if you do not manage to sleep for the full 8 hours?
If you do not manage to sleep for the full 8 hours, nothing happens; this is quite common and does not invalidate the test.
The eight hours indicated refer to the maximum recording time of the test; in most cases, a total of 4 to 6 hours of sleep is sufficient to collect valid diagnostic data to complete the study.
Is full polysomnography carried out in hospital or at home?
This test is carried out in a hospital or in a specialised sleep unit within a medical centre, where you are admitted and stay overnight while the test is monitored by specialists.
There are other much simpler types of polysomnography which, unlike this study, can be carried out on an outpatient basis at home.
How long do the results of a full overnight polysomnography study take?
Generally, the results of a full sleep analysis are available within 10 to 15 working days after the test has been carried out.
However, the delivery time for results may vary depending on the centre where the test is performed.
