What is included?

  • The purchase of the service includes the performance of the diagnostic test in the selected city and hospital.

Important: This test is performed with contrast.

  •  Once the test has been carried out, the hospital will specify how long the results will take and will provide them to you in digital format.

Each hospital or clinic has its own method for delivering results: some will send them to you by email, while others will do so via their own applications or online platforms. In any case, the hospital team will indicate how to access them upon completion of the test.

  • In Spain, a medical prescription is necessary for the performance of any diagnostic test. If you do not have one, it will be necessary to attend a consultation with a specialist beforehand to obtain it.

Below, we explain the step-by-step process, whether you have one or not:

    You have a medical prescription

    1. Purchase the test as normal.
    2. Immediately afterwards, we will send to the email address used for the purchase the instructions for you to send us the medical prescription so that we can manage the appointment.
      1. With the medical prescription, we will be able to verify that the purchased diagnostic test corresponds to the one indicated by the specialist.
    3. We will manage your appointment with a date and time so that you can attend the hospital of your choice to have the test performed.

You do not have a medical prescription

If you do not have a medical prescription, Operarme will manage a private consultation for you with one of our specialists at a preferential price (subject to availability in the area). Contact us for more information.

During the consultation, you can inform the doctor about the test you need. They may ask for a medical report regarding your medical problem, if the test you need requires it.

Remember: on the day of the test, you must bring and show the Operarme medical voucher and the medical prescription.

  • If, after having purchased the test, you decide not to go ahead with it or the appointment date does not suit your needs, you can request a refund of the amount. In these cases, we will refund the full amount of your purchase without any problem.

To do so, please contact our Patient Service team before the appointment date, and we will manage the refund quickly and easily.

01. What is an Open MRI with contrast?

Open MRI is the ideal alternative for those patients who need to undergo an MRI but suffer from claustrophobia and experience anxiety when taking the test in a "closed tube" machine, or who have severe obesity.

It is also a perfect alternative for children, as they can have their parents or guardians present during the test.

This MRI machine is distinguished by its completely open design consisting of two parallel magnetic plates (top and bottom) leaving the sides open, so patients do not have the feeling of being enclosed in a narrow and completely closed tube, as is the case with conventional MRI.

The Open MRI machine is ideal for patients with claustrophobia, as its completely open design eliminates the feeling of confinement.

Furthermore, contrast is a liquid medication known as gadolinium that is administered intravenously before the MRI scan is performed.
This medication accumulates in certain tissues and allows their electromagnetic properties to be temporarily changed, thus obtaining more defined images in the resonance.

02. What does an Open MRI with contrast detect and which parts of the body does it study?

Open MRI works in the same way as conventional resonance: it uses powerful magnets and radio waves to produce high-resolution images of the inside of the body, without emitting any radiation to the patient at any time.

It can detect various medical conditions depending on the part of the body or organ that needs to be examined: from muscle injuries, tumours, lumps, inflammation, tears and herniated discs to vascular pathologies and abnormalities in internal organs.

The main parts of the body analysed with an open magnetic resonance imaging scan are:

  • Spine.
  • Joints: knees, shoulders, wrists, ankles and hips.
  • Brain.
  • Abdomen and pelvis.

What types of MRI scans cannot be performed with an open resonance machine?

The main difference between a conventional machine and an open machine is the intensity of its magnetic field (teslas):

  1. Open machines tend to be more limited and have a low field: between 0.2T and 0.5T.
  2. Closed machines are usually more powerful and faster (high field): 1.5T to 3T.

This means that open machines are a good option when large parts of the body need to be examined, or areas that are not in constant motion, such as joints, bone structure, studies related to traumatology or rheumatology, or basic neurology studies such as the detection of brain tumours.

The studies that are not recommended to be performed by Open MRI, as the power and definition of the machine would be limited, are the following:

  • Cardiac MRI
  • Studies measuring brain activity.
  • Breast studies.
  • Spectroscopy.
  • Multiparametric prostate studies.
  • Angiographies.
