01. How is the IUD removed?
When the time comes to remove the IUD from the uterus, either because it has reached the end of its lifespan or due to the patient's own decision, a gynaecology consultation must be attended so that the specialist can first perform a physical examination and a gynaecological ultrasound to check the position of the device.
When the specialist confirms that everything is correct, they proceed with the IUD removal during this same consultation.
The steps of the IUD extraction process are usually as follows:
- Once the patient is ready on the examination table, the specialist first places the speculum to keep the vagina open.
- The specialist locates the threads left protruding from the cervix and attached to the device.
- They proceed to remove the IUD, holding the threads with forceps and pulling them gently.
- The IUD slides and exits through the cervix by folding up.
The IUD removal takes less than a minute to complete.
Does it hurt when the IUD is removed?
During the process of pulling and sliding the IUD through the cervix to extract it, the patient may experience pain similar to menstrual cramps.
This discomfort is mild and momentary, as the IUD extraction is quite fast.
What is the best time for IUD removal?
The best time to extract the device is during menstruation, since the cervix is naturally more dilated during this period, making the extraction simpler and more comfortable. Even so, the IUD can be removed at any point in the cycle.

02. What care should I take after IUD removal?
After the IUD removal, it is natural to feel mild discomfort or even experience spotting during the first few days.
Furthermore, the specialist will inform you about a series of recommendations and precautions to keep in mind over the 48h following the removal of the device:
- Do not introduce anything into the vagina during the first 48h: you cannot engage in sexual intercourse with vaginal penetration, you cannot insert objects into the vagina (tampons, menstrual cups), nor can you use vaginal douches or apply vaginal creams.
- Avoid taking baths, or using swimming pools, jacuzzis or any activity that involves immersion baths, at least during the first 48h.
- Do not pull on the IUD threads.
- In the event of feeling discomfort or pain during the first few days, do not engage in physical exertion.
- Do not ignore symptoms such as a high fever, severe abdominal or pelvic pain, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, or very heavy bleeding, and see a doctor immediately.
