Duration of gallbladder removal surgery

A cholecystectomy or gallbladder removal is performed because of gallstones forming in the gallbladder or in the bile ducts that connect it to the other organs. The main symptom is pain in the upper right side of the abdomen after large meals or eating very fatty foods. The decision to remove it is determined by cases where there is a possibility of serious complications such as biliary peritonitis.

Open cholecystectomy involves the removal of the gallbladder through a 7 to 10 cm incision in the right upper abdomen. This operation is performed under general anaesthesia and therefore requires both a stay in the recovery room and in hospital for a few days. 

The duration of the open gallbladder removal surgery is between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the characteristics of the patient.

Laparoscopic gallbladder removal is a minimally invasive technique that allows the gallbladder to be removed using only 3 mini incisions in the abdominal area. The entire procedure is performed using a mini camera connected to a monitor via fibre optics, allowing the surgeon to remove the gallbladder while looking at the monitor, without having to open the patient.

This surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and requires a shorter hospital stay than conventional cholecystectomy. 

The total duration of the laparoscopic gallbladder removal operation is slightly longer than conventional surgery, usually between 60 and 120 minutes, depending on the patient. It is currently the most commonly used surgical technique for gallbladder removal.

This procedure is performed using the laparoscopic method but with a different approach. 

This operation is performed through a single incision made at the bottom of the navel, using an instrument called a single port that allows the surgeon to insert the laparoscope and other surgical instruments through the same orifice. 

Once the operation is completed, there are no visible scars, thus avoiding the well-known scars of open cholecystectomy. The operation lasts between 35 and 45 minutes and the hospital stay does not exceed one day.

This procedure is exclusive to women for obvious reasons and consists of the removal of the gallbladder through the vagina. In this case, the navel and the vagina are used as entry points to the abdominal cavity, and the gallbladder is extracted through the vagina. 

In this case, there are no visible scars either, as two natural orifices are used. 

The duration of transvaginal laparoscopic cholecystectomy is about 40 minutes, varying according to the patient. In this case, the hospital stay is only one day.

The duration of these interventions can vary depending on the main factors being the type of surgical technique, the surgeon and the patient himself. The only thing that is absolutely certain is that the operations last exactly as long as they have to in order to solve the medical problem and avoid any type of problem.
