  • All about radiofrequency varicose veins treatment (both legs) in Barcelona

Radiofrequency varicose vein treatment is a minimally invasive technique capable of cauterising and closing varicose veins in both legs without the need to remove them, using thermal energy.

In Barcelona, Operarme offers varicose vein surgery using the radiofrequency technique with the Clínica Ntra. Sra. del Remei.

Below you will find all the information you need about radiofrequency varicose vein surgery for both legs.

  • Undergoing endovenous thermal ablation using radiofrequency is not only recommended for aesthetic reasons, but in most cases also for medical ones.

Among the medical reasons, specialists turn to varicose vein treatments to prevent future complications from this condition, such as the potential development of thrombosis in the varicose vein and the risk of pulmonary embolism.

    What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are a condition that can affect anyone, though women are more likely to suffer from them — approximately 70% of women over the age of 50 experience this problem.

Varicose veins appear when veins become elongated or widened, and are essentially a circulatory issue. Their appearance is usually caused by several factors, the most common being: genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, pregnancy, and a sedentary lifestyle or obesity.

    What is radiofrequency?

Radiofrequency is a technique that emits heat into the affected vein in order to close it. This method allows for a very targeted action on the vein and causes minimal inflammation, outperforming laser treatment results.

This technique almost entirely eliminates the common drawbacks of conventional surgery, such as:

    • Bruising
    • Scarring
    • Inguinal neovascularisation
    • Inability to return to daily routine or work
  • First of all, if you’re interested in radiofrequency treatment for varicose veins to solve the issues and discomfort caused by this condition — as well as its other bothersome symptoms — through Operarme, you can request a free consultation with our Specialist in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.

During the appointment, you will meet the doctor and he will assess your case to recommend the most suitable treatment for you.

If you’d like more information before booking your appointment, you can contact the Operarme’s team via the contact form, by calling at +34 91 141 33 56, or by clicking the Request Appointment button below:

On the day of your appointment, you must go to the address indicated on the medical voucher, bringing any medical records you may have so that the the Dr. José María Fuentes Pérez can review them during the consultation.

In the case of varicose veins, it is necessary for the doctor to perform an Eco-Doppler scan during the consultation to determine the exact points where the problem is located and to know how to carry out the surgery precisely.

As previously mentioned, this is an essential test to determine surgical indication, as well as to plan the surgical intervention itself. You can purchase your Eco-Doppler test via the following link, or if you prefer, you can resolve any doubts or request assistance by contacting our Patient Service team here.

An Eco-Doppler is a type of ultrasound scan that studies the blood flow through the veins and arteries, allowing its volume, speed, and consistency to be known.

Once at the consultation, after identifying yourself as an Operarme patient and being introduced to the Dr. José María Fuentes Pérez, the medical interview will begin. During the appointment, the doctor will:

    • Ask about your lifestyle habits and any discomfort you’re experiencing.
    • Perform your Venous Eco-doppler ultrasound.
    • Perform a physical examination.

After the consultation, if you and the Dr. José María Fuentes Pérez agree to proceed with surgery, all the necessary arrangements will be made to carry out the varicose vein operation using radiofrequency.

Following the consultation, Operarme's Patient Service Team will assist you with every step of the surgical process and help solve any questions you may have.

  • On the day of the procedure, you must go to the Clínica Ntra. Sra. del Remei and present the required documents at the admissions desk. You’ll then be taken to a waiting area, followed by a preoperative room where you will be given surgical clothing.

Once you have changed, you will be accompanied to the operating theatre, where you will meet the angiologist you previously saw during the consultation, along with a member of the nursing team who will assist during the procedure.

Radiofrequency treatment for varicose veins is performed under local anaesthesia and lasts approximately 60 minutes.

Once in the operating room, the doctor will instruct you on how to position yourself on the table before administering the anaesthetic.

In this procedure, local anaesthesia is used, followed by the following steps:

    1. Once the anaesthesia takes effect, the specialist uses ultrasound guidance to insert a small catheter into the affected vein through a minor puncture or incision.
    2. Using this catheter, which emits radiofrequency energy, controlled heat is applied to the wall of the damaged vein to seal it.
    3. Once the varicose veins have been treated, the specialist removes the equipment and applies dressings to the access points.
    4. The same process is then repeated on the second leg.

The radiofrequency technique is painless, although local anaesthesia or sedation can be used to help the patient remain relaxed.

After the endovenous thermal ablation with radiofrequency, symptoms such as pain, swelling, bruising, and heaviness in the legs typically disappear immediately.

Moreover, following surgery, blood that previously flowed through the affected vein is redirected to healthy veins, restoring normal circulatory function.

  • Undergoing radiofrequency ablation for varicose veins in both legs offers significant benefits, both aesthetically — the varicose veins disappear completely — and medically, as circulatory problems and uncomfortable symptoms are resolved. Other key advantages include:

    • It provides a safe, minimally invasive solution for varicose veins.
    • It is an outpatient procedure, meaning that after the treatment, you can walk out of the clinic and go home on your own.
    • The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, which allows you to return home straight after the procedure.
    • The precision of the radiofrequency technique ensures that it targets only the affected vein walls, without damaging surrounding tissues. This improves safety and minimises risk.
    • Most people are able to return to work and normal activities within 24–48 hours following the procedure.
    • Since the vein is not physically removed, the recovery is significantly shorter and less painful than with traditional varicose vein surgery — you can expect to be fully recovered within just 2 to 5 days.
    • Above all, the main advantage is that it effectively resolves the problem and allows you to enjoy life free of discomfort.
